By DAVE Media Donald Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration program in six months drew criticism across Ohio from senators to grassroots organizations.
HOLA Ohio, based in Painesville and Ashtabula, northeastern Ohio’s most prominent Hispanic advocacy organization, said it is determined to fight Trump’s DACA or “Dreamers” decision. HOLA Ohio works with families across Ohio and has used grassroots organizing to stop dozens of deportations, according to its website.
Officials did not return a call seeking comment Tuesday, but on the site HOLA Executive Director Veronica Dahlberg said “the situation is dire and unprecedented. I am getting phone calls every day from people who have been picked up at traffic stops, on their way to work and from their own backyards.”
On its Facebook page, HOLA posted the following comment Tuesday following the announcement:
“We are monitoring the situation with DACA. Based on preliminary information from the official announcement today (Tuesday), it appears that no new DACA applications will be accepted after today. Also, those who have DACA and it expires before March 5, 2018, will be allowed one renewal. Those with DACA that expires after March 5, 2018 will not be allowed to renew and their DACA status will expire permanently on their DACA expiration date.”
Another post said “nearly 10,000 immigrants in Ohio, mostly Hispanic Youth, would be impacted and at risk for deportation if the program is terminated.” The post added “About 1 million people nationwide have DACA.”
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, released a statement critical of President Trump’s decision to end the DACA program, which he said gives immigrants brought to the U.S. as minors the opportunity to work.
“President Trump promised to go after violent criminals, not innocent children,” Brown said. “We should not be targeting young people who are working, going to school, paying taxes and contributing to this country — the country they grew up in and the only home they’ve ever known.”
Rep. David Joyce, R-14th District, released a statement praising the decision to phase out DACA and said the responsibility is now in Congress’ hand.
“DACA was an abuse of executive power when it was created,” Joyce said.
“The president was correct to give Congress time to solve the issue. It is now up to Congress to come up with a bi-partisan solution that should include stronger border security and reforms to the immigration system.”
