GIVING FOR NCSD CHAPEL
Parents of the North Carolina School for the Deaf now have a little better than $11,000 in their fund to build a Chapel for their students. Estimated cost for the Chapel they want to build is $200,000 and that is a lot of money. But the parents keep on with rummage sales, offering tasty fruit cakes and candies, and generally looking for anybody who will give them a dollar.
Mrs. Lillian Smith, president of the board of directors for the chapel, said she was presented a couple of checks from two local churches. The Rev. Collin Benfield, pastor of Oak Forest Methodist Church, presented a check for $200, and Pastor Johnny Tiller of Burkemont Baptist Church presented a check for $78.01 from his church.
Raymond Rowe of Glen Alpine will have watermelon for Thanksgiving. He didn’t exactly plan it that way but during the summer he was having trouble with raiders bothering his melons and so he covered some of them up in grass clippings. “I hid this one from myself,” he said explaining that he forgot it and just found the 40-pound ice cream melon the other day. Apparently, the frost hadn’t hurt it. Rowe smiled and said it looks all right, it thumps all right, and seems to be all right.
SAUNDERS AND BUFF AMONG ALL STARS
Don Saunders, a 170-pound senior who plays center, whose aggression and hustle prompted Morganton High School teammates to label him Wild Man, and Mike Buff, a 255-pound senior tackle who conditioned himself by taking a mountain survival course during the summer, were named to the Northwestern Conference All-Conference football team for 1967, it was announced Monday.
The two Wildcat veterans were named to a 27-man squad, announced by William Clary of Winston-Salem, executive secretary of the North Carolina High School Activities Association.

AMONG US MORGANTONIANS J. GORDON QUEEN; (circa 1962 55 years ago)
Had you ever thought of it that College Street is a rather busy Street? On the thoroughfare you will find garages, the police station, Home laundry, Grace Hospital, a physicians office, two high schools – senior and junior, a funeral home and across the bridge you will find Bon Buick, a tractor sales place, a grocery store and beautiful residences all along the route.
Around Town: The residence of the Gene Hudson has been completed on Pearson Drive. Pearson has sure built up in recent years…Come to think of it, we note that the new Burke County Savings and Loan association building foundation is now at ground level, despite rainy weather… No Wonder we have so many beautiful gals around town, our beauty shops are on the beam…A Taxi driver was heard to say Saturday, It is raining so hard I could hardly get through the business district on account of traffic. Good shoppers in town, making a bigger shopping center and causing us to say “Morganton will grow whether we like it or not”
