SPOKANE, Wash. – A Spokane man is in jail after trying to steal a car from Becker Buick because he thought he was being chased by zombies. He planned to flee to Montana, where he thought his family would be safe.
Tyler Goodman said he had a mental breakdown the night of the break-in and now both he and Dale Cornwell, owner of Becker Buick, hope he gets the help he needs.
“I felt like something was going on yes, and the first thing I wanted to do was get my family to safety,” Goodman said.
Goodman admits he broke through the showroom window, went through the showroom and into the shop, took a Chevrolet Impala parked near the back door and rammed a door several times before finally breaking through and that’s about the time his flight from the undead ended as Spokane police arrested him.
“It was disappointing and costly,” Cornwell said. “The back door is probably $3,000 or $4,000, the windows $1,000, the car had $9,000 worth of damage, and most of that was paint because a lot of the areas were scuffed with paint.”
Cornwell says he wasn’t upset about the break-in when he learned Goodman has mental health issues.
“His mother came in and apologized to us and said she was very sorry about what happened, that her son has mental issues and that it wasn’t drugs, so we just took her word for that, but I do hope he receives some help,” he said.
Goodman also expressed remorse for the damage he did.
“I would also like to apologize [to] Becker Buick for what I did, and I will be willing to pay for all the damages for what I did,” he said.
Goodman suffers from anxiety and depression and said he needs medical help after this breakdown. Instead, for the time being, he’s in jail.
“I think I need to be evaluated by a psychologist at the hospital and I’m not being able to, I need to be evaluated and I’m stuck here with no anxiety meds or depression meds, and my mom and mental health counselor think I need to be evaluated for the mental breakdown, and I’m stuck here without getting any better,” he said.
The Spokane County Jail could not confirm if Goodman is receiving any medication in jail but did say the jail must first verify with doctors before giving inmates their prescriptions.
Goodman is being held on a $6,000 bond on charges of first-degree burglary, vehicle theft and first-degree malicious mischief.
